Come to the Well
 – Casting Crowns

WL Quick Tip: Another solid release from this well-loved group, a few songs could be used in the corporate worship setting, but most for personal listening.

In Come to the Well, Casting Crowns encourages you to let the “living water” of Christ well up inside you and then overflow to those around you both inside the Church and beyond. Inspired by the story of Jesus’ encounter with the woman at the well, the central teaching of the album is that Jesus is life; he is the well of living water. This is their fifth studio album, and by now, Casting Crowns has nearly perfected capturing their distinctive sound, although this time it seems like they have branched out a bit in their style. There is still plenty of the familiar pop-rock we’ve all grown to love, so the die hard fans will be very pleased with this latest release in songs like “Already There,” “Angel,” “My Own Worst Enemy,” and others. But, “Spirit Wind” adds a bit of folk/bluegrass into the mix, and “Face Down” features only female voices in both the lead and harmony. There are also several songs that tell a story well: “City on a Hill,” “Wedding Day,” and “Just Another Birthday.” The variety in styles adds to the complexity of the album, and keeps the listener wondering what will come next.

The opening track, “Courageous,” is one of the strongest songs on the album. It’s also the title song to the current movie in theatres of the same name, produced by the same team that brought us Fireproof and Facing the Giants. This song is so powerful, and has such a vital message to fathers to stand up for their families. The strong rock beat hits the message home and adds to the lyric’s challenge.

Another standout is “Jesus, Friend of Sinners,” which challenges the Church to see the world as Jesus does, and to show love and mercy, instead of judgment and condemnation, to those around us. What a great reminder: “The world is on their way to You, but they’re trippin’ over me … Open our eyes to the world at the end of our pointing fingers.” If you are a Casting Crowns fan, you will not be disappointed in this latest release.
