Songs usually have lives of their own. It’s nearly impossible to predict which ones are going to impact the Church over the long run. There are plenty of reasons for that, but one of them is the movement of the Holy Spirit—breathing on certain songs, some that are heard only by a songwriter and his or her congregation, and others heard around the world. That said, we can certainly choose which ones have impacted us this year. The following songs were editorially chosen as our favorite songs released in 2016 for the purpose of congregational worship. The priorities in choosing the music represented here include divine-directed prayer (songs to and about God), biblical faithfulness, poetic beauty and lyric freshness, singability, among others.

Thank you so much for the article. It would be awesome to see a 2017 list that included some diversity in genre and culture. That would be awesome if the Church branched out a bit more. I have hope! 🙂

Hi Nikki, thank you for such a gracious “nudge” to branch out in the many styles available in the church today. You have been heard. Would you mind adding a couple of your suggestions here? thank you!

        Great Are You Lord (Sinach)
        You Reign (Johnathan Stockstill)
        Let Us Adore (Elevation Worship)
