“Sing a New Song!”

This responsive reading was used in the NWLC general sessions last summer. The goal was to offer a unified prayer that was non-musical and could be more specific about the theme of the week. One beauty of a responsive reading is that it can be simultaneously a declarative statement of God’s promises and a petition for God’s grace to change us. Feel free to use this as your community worships looking for the nature of new song and the ever creative spirit of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Sing unto the LORD a New Song; sing unto the LORD all the earth.

From the Father, through the Son, by the Spirit,
we will sing a New Song to the LORD

Help us to be ever-renewed by the New Song of the Gospel
And may it constantly lead us into a new life of caring for others.

By your Spirit, we will sing a New Song, O God

Teach us to remember that the sacrifices of God are a broken spirit;
a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.
We offer our bodies a living sacrifice,
our reasonable service of worship.

By your Spirit, we will sing a New Song, O God

Remind us, oh Lord, that when we love our brothers and sisters,
we are also loving you.
May we honor the widow,
care for the orphan,
visit the prisoner,
feed the poor,
love our enemies,
leave off judging,
and forsake racism and prejudice forever.

By your Spirit, we will sing a New Song of justice and mercy, O God

Father, because we know that you are the great physician, we lift up the bodies of our loved ones at home as well as those in this gathering in need of physical healing.

By your Spirit, we will sing a New Song of hope, O God

God, thank for your creation in nature;
And thank you for entrusting us with the stewardship of this planet

By your Spirit, we will sing a New Song of stewardship, O God

You have put a New Song in our mouth because you were slain and with your blood you purchased us for God from every tribe and language and people and nation.
have made us a kingdom of priests to serve our God and reign on the earth. You have lifted us from the pit to sit with you in heavenly places.

We will sing to the LORD a New Song, a song of praise to our God

With every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, with our hearts, and our service, with our bodies, our substance, with our love, our gifts, voices, keyboards, drums, high sounding cymbals, stringed instruments, horns, basses, flutes, iPhones, ProTools, blogs, imagination, storytelling, painting, and sculpting, we SING the New Song:

To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb
be praise and honor and glory and power,
for ever and ever!” AMEN
