The Worship Leader Songwriting Conference is an affordable, high-quality, one-day event that will inspire and empower the local hymnwriter to collaborate with and compose the songs for his or her worshiping community. For over 20 years, Worship Leader magazine and Song DISCovery have made it a mission to foster the music of God’s people. Within its pages, and on the music CDs, a diverse array of songwriters have found inspiration, education, and biblical direction available nowhere else.

How do you build a community of faith? From the sound up. And for an artisan church (not a franchise church), from the indigenous sounds that come from your own midst. I am so proud of Worship Leader for sponsoring a conference where local worship leaders can create local music for churches that will love their postal codes. Wish I could be one of the attendees … The artisan church, the participatory church is on the rise.

Songwriting for the Church is a bold adventure, and it always has been. It is about beauty and passion; mindfulness and community; it brings controversy, even as it offers peace; it aligns with tradition, and completely revolutionizes the entrenched practices of the past. It is the musical artwork of the faithful that stands side-by-side with the prose of our forbears shining a light on the enduring spirit and heart of all believers.

When we write hymns, we collaborate with God. We accept the gift of his inspiration and share it with the body of Christ. When we take seriously this call, we join with a tradition of musicians, artists, and poets, tracing our lineage to King David and beyond.

Let us encourage one another in the heart and art of this important task of giving the body of Christ new songs to express their love for God and his transforming power in their lives.

Prayer in Song

The craft of songwriting for Gods house—a “ house of prayer” as named by the prophets and God himself through Jesus—is indeed a high calling. Writing for God’s house calls for our best in skill and craftsmanship in words, music, and even multimedia. But skill is not enough. The motive of everything done in God’s house is for the praise of God and not the praise of men.  Worship songwriters are called to listen to the voice of God and respond in a way that resonates with their unique worshiping community and can be offered as a shared prayer from the heart of a community.

Songwriting for the Church is, in its essence, a collaborative process. The WLSC will debunk the myth that a single personality is the sole wielder of God’s creative process. Godly creativity in songwriting takes place within a living breathing community of worshipers; it is interwoven between songwriter, worshiping community, the saints throughout history, the songs of our forbears, and all of this brought together in a great collaboration with the triune community of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

The Heritage of Faith

Worship songwriting stands uniquely in contrast to all other forms of music creation. Worship songwriters write songs that are designed to be owned by others. Worshipers cannot offer God that which they do not own. Yet, writing corporate prayers is one of our most important artistic heritages. Writing this type of music is a high art, and it is the fruit of a specific calling, understanding, and practice.

The WLSC is a place to learn how to circulate your community’s creativity and content—from sharing songs with others, to spreading it in your local church, to learning how to expose your songs the broader church. You will have the opportunity to connect with seasoned songwriters who have experience in all levels of songwriting and get the insights on what steps are necessary for your particular ministry’s goals.

The WLSC is for songwriters and composers of every stage—novice to professional.

Discover your inspiration and purpose for writing songs in the context of worship. At the WLSC you will find ways to collaborate with others, circulate your songs to a broader community, be heard in a one on one critique with leading industry publishers, find answers your questions about the new paradigm of publishing Christian music, talk to experts in the field, and find inspiration and instruction in the art of composing the sung prayers of your local community.

One-on-One Song Critiques, free for attendees!

WLSC’s one-on-one puts you across the table from an industry pro for a 20-minute evaluation of one of your original songs. If you have only written a couple songs in your life, this is a perfect way to get started on the right track. Or, if you are a seasoned writer, this is a chance for you to delve deeper into your art and entertain new approaches or ideas from a professional. Space for the one-on-one critiques, is limited and is given on a first-come, first served basis.

(To sign up for this add-on, simply click the one-on-one box on the registration page. If you are confirmed for a one-on-one, simply bring a CD with your song on it and a lyric sheet to the conference.)
