His first release in five years and the debut project on Winans’ own record label, The Praise & Worship Experience is best when it keeps the center point on the rich vocal expression of the former member of legendary gospel quartet The Winans. The rest of the musical experience can be placed in the mellow retro gospel-and-choral-led Sunday-morning church song category. And they accomplish exactly what they set out to do: gently lead you to the comforting arms of the Father with grace and class.
It wouldn’t be a good gospel release without a few “friends” and Winans passes the mic to colleagues such as Donnie McClurkin, Marvin Sapp, Bishop Paul S. Morton, Mary Mary, and Don Moen, among others. All in all, there is just something so listenable to Winans’ flowing non-confrontational style of gospel praise and worship; it’s the hand of a true master craftsman. With The Praise & Worship Experience it’s nice to have the pastor back; timeless offerings of prayer like these are rare and will be cherished for years to come.
More: Lush and listenable, quiet and passionate, this is retro gospel Church music that will last for years to come.
Less:If you are looking for cutting-edge gospel or R&B expressions á la his previous releases, look elsewhere, Winans plays things pretty safe.
