Tim Hughes and Worship Central

Avatar

In the Sept/Oct issue of worship leader, we have an extended interview with Tim Hughes where he discusses his heart for ministry and his passion to encourage and train worship leaders. Here are a couple of the thoughts from the editing room floor, plus some takeaways we got from the conversation. To read the full interview subscribe today!

WL: As Worship Central grows and expands its influence, how are you able to cultivate a culture that not only inspires others to worship, but maintains an atmosphere of worship for those who work on the site and on event/course development on an ongoing basis? How many people actually contribute to the continuing work of Worship Central?

TH: A key verse for us at Worship Central has been Psalm 127:1, “Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain.” We want to bless what God is doing rather than ask God to bless what we are doing. There’s a big difference. This desire to be faithful and obedient has kept us dependent on God. We’re not trying to build a brand, we simply want to play our part in serving worship leaders and empowering the local church. Whether on staff for Worship Central or serving as a volunteer we long to see churches on fire in worship.

We want to be a team that has “serious fun.” By that I mean we want to be good stewards of the opportunities we’ve been given, but to have as much fun as we can along the way. We want to be “relationally intentional.” We want to give our best away, generously working with others, being kingdom minded and living out of community. At the same time we want to be thoughtful and brave in developing the ministry globally. Another key is that we aim to be“locally global.” Worship Central is happening all over the world, but for us we only have integrity to train others if we are plugged in to our local church giving our best to serve the vision there. If we’re not seeing our team and church grow and flourish in worship, then what right do we have to train or encourage others? It’s the local church that keeps us grounded and keeps it real.

WL: What new resources/plans are on the horizon for Worship Central?

TH: We’re about to release a new Worship Central Live album called Set Apart. This is our strongest collection of songs to date and I can’t wait for people to hear it.

We are also about to relaunch our website to improve the user experience and reflect more of the global nature of the ministry. There are amazing songs coming out of Worship Central in New Zealand and Australia. I’m excited to see leaders from throughout Asia sharing about what they are learning in their countries. It’s going to be a big step up for us.

We’re also working hard on a few new ideas … so watch this space…  Visit worshipcentral.org.

Steps to Effective Worship Leading

[tabgroup][tab title=”Pastoral Worship Leaders”]
  • Grow in your relationship with God
  • Create gatherings of leaders and artists simply to encourage them and share vision
  • Encourage, cultivate and celebrate what you want to flourish
  • Create Space for worship leaders to write bad songs, an environment where freedom and risk are acceptable and artists are released to cut loose.
  • Bless what God is doing rather than asking him to bless what you are doing
  • Be relationally Intentional, giving your best away, generously working with others—kingdom minded and living out of community
