Hillsong Worship shares what it means for lyrics to carry the weight of God

Editorial Team

We asked Reuben Morgan of Hillsong Worship to share some songs that have helped him better understand what it means for lyrics to carry the weight of God. Here’s what he had to say.

I would say that any moment I can remember an encounter with God in worship, the lyrics were either quoting or echoing a scripture in the Bible. The power of Christian lyrics comes from the truth of God’s word; songs like Vineyard Worship’s “Refiner’s Fire” or more recently, “The Blessing.” These songs are introducing and reintroducing scripture in a powerful, new way. They are drawing us closer to God and our lives are being shaped by the Word of God as we sing them.

I could mention writers like Martin Smith, Chris Tomlin, Ben Fielding, Brooke Ligertwood, and others. So many of their songs are intentionally and masterfully saturated with scripture in ways that have ushered me into a new perspective of the gospel. Those are the songs I’m passionate about our church singing, those are the songs I want to put on in my car.
