Music Review | “Alone With My Faith” By Harry Connick Jr.

For actor and GRAMMY/Emmy Award winning multi-instrumentalist Harry Connick Jr., the COVID-19 lockdown was not a time to sit idle, but rather, a time to create. 

Born out of the recent season where he spent months alone in his home studio writing and arranging songs, recording and playing all the parts, and editing the final project together, Connick describes the recording process of Alone With My Faith as something that brought him peace and comfort through the lyrical content of the songs. 

“My life has changed / my world is uncertain / everything’s strange / everything’s new,” Connick fittingly sings to open the title track of an album created in the middle of the chaos of the last year.

Connick offers songs both new and old on Alone With My Faith, with classic hymns “Because He Lives,” “Amazing Grace,” The Old Rugged Cross” and “How Great Thou Art” making the cut after undergoing stylistic changes that bring the record into more of an R&B feel at times. 

Moving into more original content, Connick’s creativity and personal artistic expression is on full display with brass-tinted “Look Who I Found,” “Old Time Religion,” and “God and My Gospel.”

Listeners have long known Harry Connick Jr. to be an excellent vocalist and pianist, but on Alone With My Faith, the full breadth of his musical talent is shown — and it’s nothing less than impressive at every turn.
