Dwan Hills Let It Be Your Will: A Listeners Story

Dwan Hill - Let It Be Your Will

Sometimes I wonder why? Why is everything a struggle? Why does every path seem to lead uphill? Why am I broken? Questions asked by me, and by so many others. Dwan Hill’s Let It Be Your Will is a prayerful reminder of God’s answer.

With empty hands I came into the world, and when I’m done, to dust I will return.

I’ve never met Dwan Hill in person, never sat with him for coffee, or walked with him on the sidewalks of Nashville talking about music, or theology or life. But using his art, his commitment to speak the truth, and his willingness to share a moment in his journey of faith, Dwan has written a prayer that echoes in my heart. In this offering, I find a friend who has also found God’s will to be the Balm of Gilead.

I could talk about the elements of this song, the gentle melody with surprising turns, how the production proves that less can be so much more, or how the song’s construction speaks to a true master of craft. But that’s not what makes Let It Be Your Will powerful. Its power comes from Dwan’s testimony to God’s plan. In life, there is hardship, there are challenges, there is pain, but those experiences are not outside of God’s will, nor do they take away from God’s omnipotence.

Whether blessings come or blessings go, Blessed be your name.

The reality of trials, like that expressed in the second verse, shines a light on a question so many hide in their heart, but fear to ask; why does God allow bad things to happen to me? For those that choose not to follow God, there is no good answer, and little hope. But for those of us accepting the grace of our savior, the answer lies in the chorus, and in the very title of the song, Let It Be Your Will. We don’t always understand God’s timing or plan, but we can always trust his will is good. And we can pray along with Dwan, “Grant me strength to walk this journey till your perfect plans revealed.”

Sometimes the Lord will take away, or the Lord will freely give.

God does not promise prosperity by the world’s standard, nor freedom from affliction or disappointment. Why would he keep us from the very challenges that make us grow? Why would he isolate us from that which brings his grace most sharply into focus? He doesn’t. The bridge of Let It Be Your Will speaks wisdom to this: “I may not understand your timing, but I’ll trust you and be still.”

I don’t know Dwan’s story, and he doesn’t know mine, but I know I have a brother in the trials I face. A brother that has taken the time to write a letter of hope. And we share a savior who walks with us along the dusty road, directing our path and bearing our burdens.

Give me the eyes to see the goodness of my Savior while I live.

I start today with a heavy heart, as I do most days, knowing the challenges that I and my family must face. But my heart is also full of hope as I’m reminded to, “let it be Your will.” And even now as tears roll down my cheeks, and I wonder what the future holds, I will sing this prayer with Dwan, to the God who made the heavens and the earth and the mountains, “I believe your will,” for that is where my strength comes from.
