What is our job as Worship Leaders?

Our Job as Worship Leaders is to “Lift the Room.” What does this mean? It means that as Worship Leaders, our MAIN objective is to lift the congregation/listener’s attention toward the miraculous God we serve. When we walk off the stage, the atmosphere in the room should be different. Not because of us of course, but because of the anointing.

Anointed worship has the ability to lift the soul to the awareness of God in one’s life. As Worship Leaders, our job is to help and encourage our congregations to let go of whatever they’re holding onto and help turn their attention to the miracle-working creator.  We have been graced to help guide them to a place spiritually and mentally, where they can receive from God in that service. 

1 John 2:27 (NIV) – As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit—just as it has taught you, remain in him.

The Tone We Carry

God has so much that He is wanting to do each time we meet, but typically a person’s baggage, concerns, and apathy oftentimes will hinder them from receiving. It’s not that God isn’t able, it’s just that a person becomes so oppressed by the cares of life, that they will not release themselves to let the Lord in. This is where we come in. Our job is to take them by the hand, so to speak, and introduce them to a God who is able as we lead. I even believe we can get to a place where just the tone of the music alone has the ability to set an atmosphere. A place where musicians play under the anointing and not just their gift. A place where people can gather and the music alone creates an atmosphere where people from all walks of life are refreshed and made well. 

1 Samuel 16:23 (NKJV) – And so it was, whenever the spirit from God was upon Saul, that David would take a harp and play it with his hand. Then Saul would become refreshed and well, and the distressing spirit would depart from him.

It’s more than Music

Worship helps in this way. It lifts the soul (mind), to a God who is able, to God who Heals, and a God who honors His word.  It helps to realize that there truly is nothing impossible for him who believes. [Mark 9:23] We are singing more than just words, we are singing the Word of God wrapped in music. That’s why I believe that the word of God carries the same power whether preached or sung. I have seen people at the beginning of the setlist look defeated and worn out, but after singing and declaring the goodness and faithfulness of God, they leave strengthened and encouraged.

As Worship Leaders, we are given this great honor and responsibility to help establish and shift perspectives every time we lead.  It’s more than just music, but a time where answers, direction, and clarity come. It’s a time when people are gathered together to meet with God. 

1 Timothy 4:14-16 – Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy with the laying on of the hands of the eldership. Meditate on these things; give yourself entirely to them, so that your progress may be evident to all. Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you.” 

People want more than just music

Don’t get me wrong, the sound quality is important, but If a polished sound was really all that people were after, then they would just stay home, and listen to some pre-recorded amazing worship experience. They want more than a polished sound. They are coming to be inspired and meet with God. They are coming to catch our passion, which allows them to be led into His very presence.

When you strum your guitar, strum from the revelation that you’re releasing a sound that can bring walls down. If you’re a drummer play with all your heart believing that every hit drives evil spirits away. If you’re a singer, sing from the conviction that your voice is bringing heaven to earth. Lead from the perspective that you’re not singing but ministering. The words you sing have the power to produce miraculous results because they are His Words.

Christians Are Set Apart

To successfully lift the room, our life should be a life that’s so set apart and pure that when people hear us all they can see is Him, and when we lead they are more reminded of His promises than our personality. As Worship Leaders when our thoughts and desires are on His realities, things in our services will truly change, and atmospheres are lifted. 

People are coming to our services hurting, & bombarded with the things of Earth and cultures of this world. That’s why as Worship Leaders how we live and act off the stage is crucial. Yes, we live in this world, but we do not have to buy into the world’s thoughts, ideas, interests, and culture. Jesus brought a new culture to Earth, the culture of the Kingdom. This new culture had no mixture with the world.

John 17:16 (NKJV) – They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.

You Will Never Sound Like Someone You Do Not Know

There is balance in everything of course, but as Worship Leaders, we must not be caught up with everything that the world is caught up in. If we are consistently more concerned with the latest movie franchise or television series, rather than our purpose, then we will be greatly hindered. We will fall short of the potential God placed within us and not make the impact we were destined to make with our gift. Again yes we live in this world, but we are not to follow after the world. Our goals, measures of success, and reasons for doing what we do should be in direct opposition to each other.  I have found that we will never represent someone we truly do not know. I do not just want to know about God, but want to know Him, and hear Him clearly when I’m on the stage. No hindrances. 

Monday-Saturday

The problem is, if we are not careful, we can look at leading worship as a service, or an event, instead of a lifestyle. I understand, we lead worship at a church or at a conference, but when you are truly leading worship, it should flow out of your daily personal walk and communion with God. In order to see leading worship as a lifestyle, we must truly take into account our personal life, such as the things we say, the movies we watch, the music we listen to, the jokes we laugh at, and the things we allow to fill our time.

Again, worship is not simply a portion of service, but a lifestyle. I believe when we truly live a life of worship before God Monday through Saturday, we will see greater results and services being lifted when we lead worship on Sunday.

Making Room For The Holy Spirit

Thank God for all the things He has done through you, and all the ways He has moved in past services, but today is a new day. There are new things He wants to do in the next service. There are new people coming and unique opportunities for the Lord to move. We must come with the expectation that the next time we lead, God will move in a mighty, fresh way!

In closing, I want to charge you: as mentioned before, people are not coming just to hear you, but coming to be inspired and meet with God. When people sit under your music ministry, it should be obvious that you have been with God. Not to elevate you, but Him. God really wants to put His hand on our set so that every time you play, the room is lifted, and it’s apparent that He is in the room. Oh that our music would make room for His Majesty.
