His Name Was Ralph: A Legacy of Empowerment and Christ-like Love

In the world of youth ministry, few people have left a lasting impact like Ralph, known to everyone simply as “Skip.” With his short stature, bald head, and a voice reminiscent of a more enthusiastic Darth Vader, Skip was a larger-than-life figure. His energy, enthusiasm, and creativity surpassed that of the youth he served, making him a beloved mentor and friend. Despite being an orphan himself, Skip found a way to connect with and uplift anyone who felt abandoned, lost, or uncared for. His unique gift was his ability to empower others, helping them articulate their hopes and dreams and doing everything in his power to make those dreams come true.

Skip’s Mission: Empowering Youth Through the Arts

Skip’s life passion was clear: to give young people a sense of importance and accomplishment, and to assist them in discovering their purpose. He dedicated his life to creating opportunities for local youth to shine. Through performing arts groups, Skip provided countless kids with a platform to express themselves and develop their talents. These groups performed in church services, entertained at local fairs, and brought joy to various community events.

Skip’s approach was inclusive and holistic, designed to involve as many kids as possible. Whether it was singing, dancing, acting, playing instruments, or working behind the scenes with lights, graphics, costumes, and set construction, there was a place for everyone. His mentorship was more than just teaching; it was about making each individual feel genuinely important and appreciated, much like Jesus did during His time on earth.

A Mentor Like No Other

I count myself among the fortunate who were blessed to be mentored by Skip. His unique style of mentorship was a practical example of living like Jesus. Skip made sure that everyone around him felt seen, heard, and valued. His impact went beyond the arts; he helped shape lives, instilling a sense of purpose and belonging in the hearts of many.

Skip’s life came to a sudden end one summer morning. While riding his bicycle to work, he felt a pain in his chest. He stopped pedaling, set his bike aside, and lay down on the grass, where he breathed his last breath on earth. In that moment, Skip took his first breath of heavenly air. His funeral was a celebration of his life, filled with people whose lives he had touched and bright balloons symbolizing the joy he brought to the world.

A Lasting Impact

The work of God through my life can be attributed, in large part, to this short, bald, wonderful man of God with a Darth Vader voice. Skip’s legacy lives on in the lives of those he mentored, the young people he empowered, and the communities he served. His dedication to living out the love of Christ and empowering others continues to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing him.

In a world where many feel unseen and unimportant, Skip’s life reminds us of the power of love, the importance of mentorship, and the impact one person can have when they choose to live for others. May we all strive to be like Skip, living each day as a practical example of Jesus, making those around us feel genuinely important and appreciated.
