Reflection on 2020: Trusting God

Lexi Fromm

In their hearts humans plan their course, but the LORD establishes their steps.

Proverbs 16:9

I was 15 years old and had just recently received my learner’s permit as I made my way up the back road  to Lake Tahoe, on the California side. My dad was in the passenger seat…fast asleep. If you knew him, then you knew he liked to take risks. But for me, I knew dad as my partner in adventures and new ventures. Growing up, he always gave me opportunities to lead and learn along the way… and above all, trust God.

As I reflect back on 2020, I see it as a time where we all were faced with new opportunities to lead and learn along the way. Whether taking your church online for the first time or finding ways to safely gather. But more than anything, this year reminded us to put our trust in God.

Into the unknown

Proverbs 16:9 has been one of my favorite verses since I was a child. It tells us that God’s plan for our lives is bigger than anything we could plan or prepare for. A lot of blame for the unexpectedness that this year has brought has been placed directly on “2020.” But I think we need to go back to living day by day, less perfection planning, and more trusting in God.

On July 27, 2020, that trust that I’ve always known was tested beyond what I thought possible. My father entered heaven’s gates—a place we’ve been told about since I was a child—and without a doubt he was met with worship from heaven’s worship leader, Jesus. Meanwhile, I’m left here to run the ministry of WL…without my best friend.

When I look back on 2020, I don’t think about the pandemic that shutdown the world, I think about my father’s health journey and how my trust in God was tested over and over again.

Wilderness camping

On January 3, 2020, my dad fell. This started a long journey of diagnosis after diagnosis after diagnosis. With each hospital visit, I desperately tried to figure out how my dad could be healed. Asking and pleading with God instead of trusting that His plan is the greatest of all.

It wasn’t until the summer of 2020 that my dad was given his last diagnosis, dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB). A horrible disease with no treatment available. Shortly after this final diagnosis my dad went home to heaven.

(There’s a lot more that can be said about the highs and lows of this journey but for now I just would like to ask for your prayers as we as a family still reconcile ourselves to our dad no longer being here on earth with us. He was after all, so much and then some to each of us.)

My dad had several favorite verses. One that I remember him sharing with me when going through a challenging time is Romans 8:28: “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

Another reminder to: Trust God.

When we finally made it to Lake Tahoe, our plan to camp was foiled. We didn’t have the right gear to pitch a tent. My dad decided that we’d camp in style instead.

Sharing the story of how we camped at the Embassy Suites was one of my dad’s favorites to tell and I’ll forever be grateful for our daddy-daughter adventures. I learned to grow as a leader and most importantly absorb what trusting God looks like from a man who lived a life trusting God, always.

IT’S ALL ABOUT JESUS

In June 2020, we had a meeting to discuss WL’s mission. My dad (Chuck Fromm) reminded us over and over again that everything we do at WL and all of the wonderful partnerships we make are about one thing: “it’s all about Jesus. Everything we do must point to Jesus.”

Over the last 30 years my dad has done his best to protect this, to advocate for Spirit and Truth worship and remind the body that the Church is a house of prayer for all nations. And as the new leader at WL, nothing is changing. It was and will always be all about Jesus at WL and His body; this starts with the Jesus followers within WL.

Each team member we are blessed to have at WL is pouring their passion into providing the best resources for worship teams. From our podcast hosts, Steve and Shawn Reed, to our guest editors and advisors, Andrea Hunter and Robb Redman, to our marvelous interns, Caitlin Lassiter and LeighAnne Ford, to our events and admin coordinator (my mom) Stephanie Fromm, to our new cohort director, Jason Squires, and lastly our amazing sales director, Alissa Smith. It takes a team and this team is all about Jesus.

For 2021 we are excited to make the focus of our year all about Rediscover: Communities of Worship & Prayer. Throughout the year we will look at rediscovering what’s at the core and heart of our communities of worship and prayer. We’ll ask tough questions, discuss challenging topics and search for God’s answers through His Word (the Text) and His people. We look forward to diving deeper into this theme not just through the magazine but also web posts (worshipleader.com) and free bi-monthly events (WL Gatherings).

Above all, 2021 is all about Jesus, because He is the pioneer, trailblazer and lead worshiper on this continuing adventure. And thankfully, Jesus never fails.
