God’s Chosen People by Chris Vacher

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 1 Peter 2:9

Reflection:

One thing we must never get out of order is how our worship happens. God initiates, and we respond. Always. We can never get that mixed up and believe that our worship somehow causes God to do something in us. God initiates, and we respond.

We see here that we are a chosen people – chosen by God, called by God, gathered by God, and brought in by God to be part of His family. We are a royal priesthood – ordained by God, set apart by God to do the holy work of God He has created us to do. We are a holy nation – not first by ethnic heritage or birthplace but a global nation set apart to demonstrate the goodness and grace of our God. We are God’s special possession – owned by God, valued by God, protected, and treasured by God because we belong to Him.

And then … the response. God initiates all that we are and then we respond by declaring His praises. We sing we shout, we celebrate, and we live to the glory of God because we are chosen, called, gathered, ordained, set apart, owned, valued, and treasured by a God who dwells in wonderful light and invites us to be part of the work He is doing.

God initiates, and we respond. Never the other way.

Response:

How would the worship of our church change if we truly saw ourselves as this verse describes us?

What are the different ways we “declare the praises” of God?

Can you recognize how God has called you out of darkness into wonderful light?

Worship Team Prayer:

God of wonderful light, we recognize that You have chosen us and called us, ordained us and set us apart, treasured us and protected us so that now we can declare Your praises along with our church. Thank You for Jesus and how He gave Himself so that now we can be part of Your family. Thank You for bringing us from darkness to light, from death to life and for making us Your people. Help us to lead Your people this weekend in declaring Your praises so that many more would move from darkness to light by knowing Jesus. Amen.
