Music Review | “Songs of Faith” By Simple Hymns

Randy Cross

Simple instrumental arrangements and thought provoking lyric define the seventh offering in the Simple Hymns series, Songs of Faith.  These instantly recognizable ancient and modern hymns feature a cadre’ of today’s worship leaders singing simple, new arrangements of great songs with deep, thought provoking lyrical content.  From the Simple Hymns website:  “Simple Hymns is a response to the longing for a return to a deeper and more lyric focused truth, combined with a simplicity of musical expression in worship music.”

The recently released Songs of Faith entry into the Simple Hymns series sets the stage for a visit to classic hymns like “Come Thou Long Expected Jesus” (featuring Chris Lawson Jones) and the Keith and Kristen Getty penned modern hymns “By Faith” and “Speak, Oh Lord.”  It also showcases the theological melodies of more recent hymn offerings “All to Us” and “Cornerstone.”

More: Songs of Faith continues the legacy of the Simple Hymns series by introducing the diversity of ageless praise poetry set to acoustically tinged new imaginings.

Less: Great collection, but we would have liked to have heard one more “ancient” song as well as a representative of the Jesus Movement hymns.
