Dwan Hill speaks to the foundation of worship. In this Worship Sound Bite, Dwan says, “Worship, in the most general sense, is a response to the worthiness of God.” It is beyond just the corporate activity of praise in a church setting and reaches far deeper into our lives.

Worship is a lifestyle, a surrendered lifestyle, an obedient lifestyle, and a sacrifice. Paul says in Romans 12:1,

“Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God. This is your true and proper worship.”

Dwan points out, “We were created to worship whether we are worshipping Him, or something we value. It’s an automatic response to what we value.” He later echoes Westminster’s confession, “The chief end of man is to glorify God and to enjoy him forever.”

True worship is centered on God. We can worship other things, and in our fallen state often do. But that, inevitably, leads to hardship, pain, guilt, and shame. In John 4:24, Jesus says,

“God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”

So, worship is not tied to a specific action, but tied to our heart, soul, and mind directed at God the Father through his Son, Jesus Christ. Since there is nothing greater than God, there is no reason for our worship to be directed anywhere else.

Dwan is a worship leader, three-time GRAMMY award winner, two-time Dove Award winner, and two-time ASCAP Rhythm and Soul award winner. As a songwriter, producer, musician, and writer, Dwan spends much of his time writing songs for Integrity Music, and with his own publishing companies Big Buddie Music and Let Them Hear. At the heart of his creativity is Dwans’ love of teaching, but his greatest joy is his wife and two kids.
