Centricity Worship Songwriters Share Message Behind “You See Me (In Focus)”

Below is an exclusive Q&A with the writers of Centricity Worship’s new single “You See Me (In Focus).” Produced by Patrick Mayberry and featuring Rita Springer and Seth Condrey, the hopeful new song was written during the most recent retreat by Springer, Condrey and Matt Armstrong.

Matt Armstrong:

What was the inspiration or impetus behind this song?

We wrote this song out at the Centricity Worship Retreat.  Prior to our writing, Rita Springer had mentioned to me that she felt the Lord was speaking to her about me, saying, “…Even though I may not feel it, The Lord sees me in focus and he always has.  Fast forward, the three of us were having a discussion about our life journeys and that theme of “In Focus” just began to stir and we wrote it very quickly.  Thankful for Seth, and Rita and their willingness to dive into a song that calls us to remember that Jesus is the same in our lives as He was yesterday, today, and forever.  He wants the best for us…and He knows our journey more than anyone and still loves the root of who we are and who He made as His sons and daughters.  He always has and always will.

What do you hope listeners take away from this song?

I hope people are able to come to a place of worship realizing that Jesus has no timeline…He sees the big picture and He’s always in your ear saying He loves what He made and what He made is perfect.

What was it like working with the other songwriters on this song?

Seth and I have been great writing partners and friends for a few years now.  He’s one of the greatest writers I’ve had the privilege to work with.  He’s constantly throwing out amazing ideas and melodies.  I’ve never had the chance to work with Rita prior to that session. However, I’ve never met anyone that can put together ideas and lyrics like her…she’s a true lyricist and was an inspiration to write with.  I think the best thing about both Rita Springer and Seth Condrey is that they are so in tune with Jesus that it’s hard to not come away with something.  When you walk that close to The Lord, there’s just always a song on your lips and a melody in your heart.  And they both walk with Jesus and it shows so luminous through them as writers and children of God.

Seth Condrey:

What was the inspiration or impetus behind this song?

It all started with a vulnerable, transparent conversation between Matt, Rita and I.  Matt Armstrong, who is one of the sweetest and greatest humans on the planet, prompted the conversation, confessing that at times during the pandemic, he had felt lost, and God seemed distant. He was honest about the struggle with purpose and meaning, and feeling forgotten. I knew that feeling well, and I imagine a lot of us have felt that way over the past couple years. We were tuning in, and Rita began to listen intently to Matt, and the Spirit began to speak. Then came the song 🙂

What do you hope listeners take away from this song?

I’d love for this song to bring an awareness of the presence of the God who sees. Just like Jesus taught us, the Father sees who we are and cares for every detail. He is love and can’t love us any more or less than He already does.

What was it like working with the other songwriters on this song?

Matt and Rita are some of the most genuine people I know. Being around the two of them and writing together changed my heart for the better. And I’m so grateful to have had that opportunity.
