The Journey of a Song

Everyone’s approach to songwriting is personal, unique, and equally valuable. But this is how it usually happens for me.

It begins with a phrase or word that jumps out at me from my mind, the Bible, a book, a movie or something said in conversation. That becomes the foundation on which the whole song is built. It’s usually the hook, word or phrase, so most often it will be positioned as the first or last line in my chorus.

When the song feels finished, I usually show it to some people I re- spect—songwriters, theologians, pastors and also some congregation members who have no musical education. Their combined opinions count a lot in the process of editing and finishing the song,

I’ll usually test drive it in a small home group meeting, and get feedback on how well it works in a corporate setting.
